We bought the trailer for $100 and chopped and added a good portion of the frame. All of the metal was lying around my dad's shop. Here is the price breakdown:
Original purchase - $100
Deck boards - Free
Bolts - $15
Automotive paint, hardner, thinner - $150
Stain/uv/water protectant - $25
Wiring, led's, side marker lights - $150
Total $440 Not too bad.
I just finished putting together the wiring harness today....I'll have some time to hang it next weekend and then I'll get together a shot of the bling!
What year is it? The big thing is to check for rust in the usual areas (cab corners, check body mounts, etc), and I prefer to stay away from the early years with the closed knuckles and the crappy power assist...but thats more preference really.
Well, I wouldn't say to stay away from the early models, per se, but I think it was around the mid 70s they switched over to open knuckle disk brake d44s. I "think" it was around then they got away from the power assist too. Like I said, its really preference on my part. Heck, my '72 was closed knuckle power assist and I never had any problems with it. Since rust isn't an issue, just make sure your body mounts are in good shape and its not spitting fluids out of anywhere. These trucks are about as bullet proof as you can get. I like to eyeball the wiring pretty good and check the condition of the joints, tre's because thats a good indicator of how its been maintained. I also like to look at the oil closely, especially for any foam (h20) or unusual thickness. If its really thick its a good bet they added really heavy oil or an agent to help cover up some engine noise. Good luck!
It was about 75-76 when the went to open knuckles if i remember right (i did an extensive search when tying to id a particular axle), and they didn't go to the good steering in the 3/4 tons till 78, 1/2 tons were sooner.
