OK, I'll start right off with tech questions:
92 ranger, extra-cab, 4wd, 4L v6
Is the only computer the one behind the drivers side folding seat, or is there another behind one of the front kick panels?
My odd problem; When I accelerate in a gear, it feels a little 'flat', especially at part throttle settings. When I accel. in the same gear, giving it slightly more throttle as I go, when the throttle reaches a certain point, the power suddenly jumps as though I just goosed the gas.
The obvious guess was throttle position sensor- changed it, not much change, but I think there was some improvement.
I'm in temp living for my new job, so I don't have my manual, multimeter, or much oin the way of tools.
I believe the EEC computer (a/k/a the "PCM) is located at the passenger side kick panel on your '92.
I think the electronic 4WD module is located behind the seat.
The first thing to do is pull any trouble codes that might be stored, all you need is a short piece of wire, even a paper clip works fine: Pulling Ford EEC-IV codes
When's the last time your 4.0L had a tuneup? Fuel filter?
Hey, Rock, today I cleaned the MAF and pulled codes.
I did the EOKO codes, and got 52,2,52,2 which I think means 52 & 20. 20 isn't listed, though, but I'm clearly getting a 2!
Its been tuned fairly recently. Hopefully tomorrow I can pull the engine running codes.
There is no "2" code, it might be a "11" code which is a pass code. The 52 is probably nothing, a lot of times it pops up if the EEC Test is not done exactly right, in any case a 52 wouldn't be associated with your surging condition.
I'm still thinking fuel delivery. What about that fuel filter? Also, a fuel pressure test would be a good idea, although it's not something you can do without a gauge.
Yeah there's lots I could check with my full set of tools, (back in CT), fuel pressure would be nice to check too.
It IS flashing a dang 2 at me though.
The 52 is for the power steering sensor being the same value- with the engine not running, that's what you'd expect.
I'm hoping the engine-running tests are usefully indicative.
if this helps?1-vacuumleak at intake man or hoses 2-dirty air filter 3-fuel pump or pressure regulator bad.4-fuel injection or eec-iv muffunction.this is per my 91-2000 explorer book under engine surges while holding throttle steady. is vague but gives ideas.
also, someone could have monkeyed around with idle stop screw, or throttle kicker ? maybe? these have adjustment maybe too messed with?you'll know kicker,if has, when a/c comes on and off.
