I have an 05 350 s/b s/c. Was considering straight pipng the muffler. I had a few questions to those who have done this;
a) do the egts drop?
b) does it droan in the cab? how bad?
c) does it give more turbo whistle or just more noise?
d) does it give more power?
e) will ford say it breaks the warranty?
f) is it obnoxious?
Kind of wanted to leave the cat, i think i gotta have it for IM. thanks for any input. - 450kid
I straight piped my first 2003, after the 36,000 mile
warranty was over. The whistle was much louder at an idle and got a whole lot quieter when you were underway. I had no way of knowing if the egt's dropped, but the muffler shop that put it on told me he did one the week before mine and the egt's did drop. The drone in the cab is not noticeable. I noticed the turbo boost was a little quicker. I have had five SD since 2001, excluding the 2004 year and I have never seen one lacking power. Sounds like a jet sitting on runway waiting to take off at an idle. Real SWEEEET! I haven't made my mine up yet if I will straight pipe my 2005. The 2005 has the new turbine vanes and I do not know if the sound will be the same. As I get older, I start to question all the situations I read about because we all want to do something more to a perfectly good truck. I sure have learned a lot reading in the FTE website. Hopes this answers your questions.
I am thinking of doing the same thing. What size pipe are you going to use, and are you going catback or turbo back? Does anyone have soundclips of a stock 6.0 with no muffler. You mentioned the 36k warantee, but doesn't it go to 100k (or 5 years on the PSD)? Thanks Levi
I just did a straight pipe from the cat back, 4", and I completely hate it!!! It sounds cool when the truck is idle, but if you get on the throttle, it sounds like a tractor. Im gathering up a few dollars to install a free flow muffler, hopefully itll keep the cool idle sound, and get rid of the tractor sound. My advice, dont do it without a freeflow muffler.....unless you like how tractors sound....
I just straight piped mine, went with standard 3.5" pipe, I like the sound but it seems to have lost a little power and my milage seems little lower, but it may be that I'm just getting a little harder on the throttle too hear the nicer rumble.
I heard somewhere that some exhaust modifications can reduce power, unless the truck was chiped. Don't know why that would be. Does anyone have a sound clip of the no muffler sound. Preferably on an 04. I had no mufflers on my 5.4 F150, and I loved the way it sounded. Levi
I had mine straight piped for 80 miles. It was way to loud for me. As soon as I got home I put the muffler back in. I left the kitty out though and it sounds great.
