I'm just curious on what most people in here run as far as exhaust pipe size. My truck has 2 1/4" pipes running into Magna Flows. The truck is actually too quiet for my taste. I'm thinking of running 2 1/2" or even 3" pipes. I love the sound of Flowmaster's but went with the Magna Flows because all my friends said they sound awesome. I believe they may be 3 chamber mufflers. I spent a small fortune getting them but want the truck to have a little more growl at both idle and acceleration. The tips are turn downs before the rear end. Any suggestions?
Have heard of (no pun) similar probs. 1 guy went turbo, 1 guy went to 2.5" ( I liked that one), but 1 guy just put cut down drive shafts at the end of the system starting at the axle ( recall Bellflowers) sounds like a deep rumble ( he has Magna's). Me? 2.5" polished alum,3 chamber turbos, heavy wall aluminum tubes out back.
i just got mine sounding good. i have 3" pipe all the way back 3 chamber flowmasters. the three chambers sound good, not quite as loud as the 2 chambers. i wanted it to sound throaty but not obnocios.
2 1/4 with flowmaster original 40 series. 3" tips behind the wheels. Lots of compliments, A little too rowdy for my tastes. I'm in the same boat. Too much money invested. I'm just gonna deal with it for awhile.
BTW, I understand the Flowmaster patent has expired. There are knockoffs for half the cost now that sound the same. Whether they are as durable I have not a clue. Tips do make a noticeable difference. You can slip them on and off and hear the difference. IMO, 2 1/4 is the perfect sized pipe for a street smallblock.
Open headers.......neibours say it sounds great in the shed, echoing off the tin roof.
They seem to like my BullHorn too
Well I think they like it......I'm sure that's a thumb they keep holding up.
I am going with 2.25 with Thrush glasspacks and turn outs in front of the wheels. I have flanges on the back of the glasspacks and will run ugly tailpipes over the diff and a second set of muflers just for rego.
They will probably fall off a couple of days after rego Hate it when that happens. Happened to the cycle fenders on my channeled A roadster too
We have a stupid rule here that both pipes must exit on the right hand side, at least 4" past the bumper/towbar. They say it is to protect pedestrians from the noxious fumes
imlower2........me too, 2 1/4" with Magnas. My FE motor is dead nuts stock and at idle its almost as quite as a new car, it perks up at speed. They offered two lengths and I got the longer one. I get tired of doing everything twice......

I am watching this thread with interest and would like to know which model mufflers youa re talking about. The magna flo offers three models. I am going to have to put exhaust on the split six and am looking at a dual in dual out magneflo 24" long.
Christopher2.............I have the bed off the truck, so I went out and measured the Magnaflows, the body of the mufflers is 18 inches long. Stock 390 motor, duel Magna's, 2 1/4 pipe. I forgot till I looked again, I had the pipes stop at the axle, I couldn't decide how I wanted them to exit. I wish they were a little louder.

2 1/2 aluminized pipes to flowmasters, rear exit, I thought that way they would sound louder for everyone , but not be too obnoxious in cab. They sound real healthy outside but I haven't got interior insulated or windows yet, so I don't know how it is going to sound inside cab Wayne
I'll be needing to do exhaust soon (straight 6, 223) and don't expect that I can do much to make it sound very deep. I was wondering if any of you have tried 'Smitties'. I know I didn't spell that right, but I understand they were used on hotrods in the 50's. Anyone know how they sound?
Starfox... I ran the "Smithy's" in a Duece-coupe with a mild 302 motor and they sounded good. Not to loud, with a throaty sound. But remember the 302 motor is probably the best sounding motor Ford ever made IMO. The reason I didn't use them on my '53 is the 390 motor needs bigger than 2" pipe. As far as tell they only come in 2", that will be fine for a 6 popper.

i am rinning 2.25 pipes and some glasspacks with pipes out the back, i want as much pipe as i can get to get that raaaappppp. i figure the cleveland might choke a bit, but should have better torque that it is usually lacking. i ran 3 inch duals out of the y pipe on my 302 powered ford truck , it was not to my liking. it rumbled up a bit but would have sounded better with 2.5".
im running 292 wihth headers with 2 1/2 pipes and 2, 2 foot long glass packs the exit undernieth the bed thell blow your ears off though.hope to make a set that exit in front of rear tires
