I have a 93 F150, wiht 70,000 original miles. The power window on the drivers side will not roll up without asistance. The motor runs, but gearbox? slips. What is in there, and how hard is it to change???
A few years ago my drivers side did the same thing. I got a repair kit from the dealer. You have to drill out a couple rivits and replace with the included bolts. It just a swap out for a "plastic" gear. Cost about $35. Passenger side just did it too. I got a kit from Advance Auto Parts for about $24. Haven't got it in yet but I assume its about the same. Not bad for 275,000 miles.
There are 3 little plastic plugs inside the motor gear assembly. After time, they disentegrate and the gear 'slips' and cannot push the window up.
AdvanceAuto Parts has these 3 plastic things. Look for them in the Help accesories section (door handles, door lock switches, etc.) It's about $7.
You remove the door panel and take out the motor. My '93 had I think 2 bolts. One you can see it, the other you must drill a hole. On the door metal, you'll see a small 'dimple' indentation. Drill 1/2" there so you can get the other bolt. The motor comes loose now.
On the motor there is a metal cap that covers a big gear. Inside, you'll notice lots of broken plastic (the old 3 plastic plugs). Put the new plastic plugs in and re-install.
My 93 power window gears striped on me about a month ago. I went to 3 diffrent autoparts stores and all 3 had the wrong gear kit for my truck. When I was walking out a guy stoped me and told me a trick how to fix my problem. All it took was 3 5/16" nuts. The small gear is triangle shaped on the back and fits inside another gear that is turned by the motor. All I had to do was place the 3 5/16" nuts in the corners and place the small gear back in. Fifty cents and a month later and still working.
In the referenced link pay attention to guzzler96's post about leaving the motor plugged in until the motor is out of the door. Look into the bottom of the door and ask yourself "how would I get the motor out of there if I dropped it?"
