I am changing the fan clutch on a 2001 Power Stroke. The bolts that hold the clutch to the water pump pulley, are they 10mm? Cause that is all that fits and it slips! Are the bolts reverse threaded? What is the deal with this POS. I can't break them loose. I cant even get a socket on them cause the space is tight the socket wont fit on the head. This used to be an easy job, WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED. 4hrs and a six pack later i cant the darn things off.
By the way this fan clutch is in a 2001 E350 ambulance.
I thought you unscrewed the whole fan from the water pump. Put a large wrench on the hex shaped shoulder and turn it in the same direction that the fan rotates. If I remember correctly that would be left hand threads.
The clutch is bolted to the fan, but the fan is threaded on to the water pump. Looking down at the fan from in front of the truck, it turns counterclockwise to remove. Once the fan is off it's easy to get to the bolts for the clutch. The downside is it can also be a PITA to break the torque on the fan.
There are 8 bolts in all. 4 bolt the fan to the clutch, and 4 bolt the clutch to the water pump pulley. The 4 that bolt the fan to the clutch are a different size than the ones that bolt the clutch to the pulley. The 4 that bolt the fan onto the clutch were no problem. The ones that bolt the clutch to the pulley are the ones that are a pain. The head of the bolts are really close to the shaft of the clutch, so you cant get a socket on them. You cant even get a boxed end wrench on them. So im stuck using an open end wrench and it slips, and is starting to round off the bolt heads. Any ideas on what to use to get these off?
Got it all figured out. The whole thing does just screw off the water pump. The darn parts store gave me the wrong clutch 3 times. The first one was for a chebbie, the second one was totally wrong and the third had a really long shaft on it so it wouldn't clear the radiator. That was the root of all the confusion. Once I got the right clutch it was easy to figure out and get it done.
