MY truck recently started making lound ticking noises which I would assume to be a lifter sticking. There is no set time when this sound occurs, sometimes it starts fine (no noise) in the morning, and other times I hear the noise. Also sometimes after driving the sound will go away, and other times it will not. Also engine temperature does not seem to have an effect. I was just curious as to how hard it would be to inspect the lifters. My truck is a '90 with a 302. I would hope that this task would be as easy as removing the intake, and valve covers, and removing the rockers and pulling out the lifters. I've never worked on this engine much at all so am not familiar with how hard they are to work on. Any information on this topic and/or tips on inspecting the lifters would be appreciated. Thank You
i posted a question yesterday about my dads truck making a loud knocking noise when first started, well his noise was from the engine being deprived of oil, the oil pump pickup screen was clogged, i thought it wasnt but it was, we used stp engine flush
before we changed the oil, after that we start it up now and it doesnt knock, this could be your problem, flush the engine, flushing may help if its a ticking lifter, i really think you should flush th motor, i bet it will clear up the noise.
