Noisey smog pump
Hey I was wanting to know if anybody else has a noisey smog pump??I have a '95 s/c xlt 4x4 w/a 302.I live in the midwest and since we're getting all this artic air my smog pump starts clankin' after the truck has been running for about two minutes in the morning.I've got 64,000 on it and thought about just replacing it but it wasnt this noisey in the fall but I wouldnt think you should hear it at all.Its real annoying!!!Thanks!!

When you say clanking, does it sound like a clattering? My 90 F-150 300-6 with 140k is making a clattering noise and I havent figured out what it is yet. How'd you figured out it was the smog pump?

Windsor, It sounds to me that your smog pump is on the way out. When they start to chatter and clank, it means that the parts are starting to get sloppy inside. I have had these pumps seize up and make the belt squeal around the pulley until it finally snapped. I would suggest replacing the pump.

The above post is right, according to the local wrench. The only thing that I can add, is that it may not come apart for quite a while. My '93 'Vic does this when its cold, and has for as long as I've owned it, 2 years, and for who knows how long before. I'm not to worried, I have AAA, and the local wrench here services a lot of Fords. My mothers '87 Thunderbird started doing this about 6 years ago, and now it does it whether or not it is cold. My Dad refuses to fix it until it totally breaks. He's going to get rid of it soon, is his reason. Yours may lock up tomorrow, or outlast the rest of the truck. It's a gamble. I'm going to replace mine if I keep my 'Vic after I buy my new truck this spring. Good luck.....
