i have a carter electric fuel pump feeding my dual holley 450's and on hard acceleration it back fires and acts like its not getting fuel. my gauge shows 5.5 . im thinking that im not getting enough fuel. the truck runs great except when you really get on it. do you guys agree that the fuel pump may be the problem? thanks
No, I think you've got plenty of fuel pressure. My guess would be timing. Are you running a vacuum advance or mechanical. I'd check the timing and the vacuum advance.
randy, i have set the timing and its good to go. not using vacum advance. even changed the jets in the carb. not sure whats going on but definately want to fix it, going slow sucks.
I wouldn't assume you are running lean. I had a vehicle with the same symptoms and it was running rich. Is this a new setup? Has this setup ever worked correctly on your vehicle?
Can you pin point it to a RPM or throttle position? I am not sure what else you have done to the motor but I would reccomend that you take the truck down and have it dyno tuned. They can tell you which cylinders are missing at what RPM under load and if you are running rich or lean. You should be able to take it to a modern local garage and put a meter in the tale pipe and tell you if you are running rich or lean. In the long run I bet it would be cheaper than guessing and throwing money a problem you don't fully understand. Running the test on a Dyno will help you understand the problem.
