lower door seals?

lower door seals?
are these thing needed on my 99 psd? they collect dirt/moisture causing heaven for rust! i have seen a couple of guys rip em off and throw em away. do they actually seal any thing or are they dirt traps? I'm talking about the ones that are on the bottom of the door not the cab. thanks for your help.
