while on the subject of cat conv., has anyone replaced the two in-line cats with one (single)? I assume that would still be illegal, since it would be modifying the exhaust? any clue? if so, how did it perform after the exchange?

David,
Tampering with the emissions control devices on a vehicle originally
equipped with such is illegal, punishable by pretty stiff fines. Tampering
is covered in Section 203 of the Clean Air Act.
States CANNOT preempt federal rules.
The EPA Office of Mobile Sources WWW site should have some information of
interest to you. That address is http://www.epa.gov/OMSWWW/omshome.htm.
Using Dave's latest website information, I was able to look at some documents that further clarified the fines. The $10,000 fine mentioned earlier talks about dealers or manufacturers. Looking further into the EPA guidelines, others such as mechanics or exhaust builders are subject to a maximum fine of $2,500. I still have not found any reference to fines for owners who modify emissions equipment.
just do it man. ALL of my friends, which includes at the least 50, have removed the cats. guess what? npot one of them has served jail time. the only time you need to worry about it is if you have a '77 or newer vehicle. i have a 93 f-150 and i got a good 30 horsepower out of it at the wheels. one more truck won't hurt.
For the guy who asked about relpacing the two cat setup with one, Yes it is legal. I have done it, simply because my front convertor came apart and plugged the rear convertor up. There is a company that makes the kit to so it, the name of the company is PFP or Products For Power. I bought the kit through Summit Racing and it was only like $180.00, but Let me warn you. No muffler shop will even touch it, so you can't ask them to put it on for you. It's one of those deals you have to do yourself.
Of course, the system that's under my truck now is totally custom. he front cat on the 5.0 pipe came apart and plugged the back convertor up. So, in place of the front convertor, I installed a Flowmaster y-collector. And put my higg flow catalytic convertor from when I had the 6 cylinder in my truck back in behind the Y-collector, and piped the A.I.R. pipe right back into the exhaust pipe (which is where it was before.) I am going to go in the near future and just for kicks have the Texas Emissions test run on it just to see how it does.

I am not sure what the emissions laws are from state to state, but we had to have every one of our gassers ran through emission testing every year. Trucks from our F-700's (GVW 27,000) to LTS-800's (GVW 60,000). We now even have to run the F-700's on a dynomometer emissions test. Our heavy trucks are older and do not have cats on them, but a local lumber yard has a bunch of mid to late 90's GMC topkicks, (GVW 27,000 to 38,000), that all have cats behind the muffler. I know, I know, there GMC's, but I just thought that I would mention it. N.J. testing can be tough. If they could get our tandem trucks on a dynomometer, they would test them too.
"One more won't hurt" Yeah how about the fifty guys you know and the fifty I know, and the fifty everybody on this board knows.
"Bad for the enviroment? GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!!! Winn... " Trying running (And I mean moving your two legs) around some day right down the freeway during rush hour and then try it a 2:00 in the morning. Tell me what you think of the smell of smog. It's all of you joy boys that screw everything up for the rest of us. How do you think emission tests got started? Lordy, if I take off my cat I'll get 30 more hp!!! If you would have bought a larger engine to begin with you wouldn't need 30 more hp. And if you bought you're truck new then I bet you could afford the extra cubic inches. If you bought your truck used, I'll bet you could have waited a month or two, maybe a couple of cd's, or 6 packs and you could have afforded it. Or better yet all you carberated guys could legally swap in a efi. 302carb to 351 efi is perfectly legal. No you take the easy way out.
That's my opinion, (and pet peeve).
