I yanked out the heater/defroster unit today to find the heater core is all expanded, clogged, fins corroded, bent, and in general, toast. The catalogs don't list the core for a '62, and I'm pretty sure it's not something a radiator shop can repair, although I haven't checked yet. Anybody have a suggestion?
I easily got a replacement for my '66 from the local auto parts store for around $35. Take the old one in with you so you can eyeball the new one. I think the replacement I got was listed for a '71. Maybe your truck also can be fitted with cores from a wide range of years. Good luck.
If memory serves the same core is used to 79, in case you run into a dipstick at the parts counter. I have the part number somewhere, but when I need it.............
The parts book I'm looking at separates the heater cores by 57-60, 61-64, 65-72. This may just be this vendor's parts stock but they are different numbers. The 62 diagram also appears to be different from the 66. I'm sure Barry will be able to help out here.
Any numbers on the core itself, or the heater box? There were accessory heater kits available for 65-66 for a while. The standard heater kit had 1 control **** and the deluxe had 3 control *****. It doesn't go into details of the kit. 64 had a kit also.
65-66 Deluxe C5TZ 18455-A
65-66 Standard C5TZ 18455-E
64 Standard C4TZ 18455-C
THose are the only years listed. 61-63 don't show any. I tried to locate any, and no luck, Maybe the one you tried to fit was a accessory kit, who know? Look for any numbers and let me know.
There were no part numbers on the core when i painted it.
It is similar to a 65 core in size but the lower tank and outlet pipes are in the old pre 65 type with being horizontal out n in under the battery box.
Were the cases the same for both years? Just the cores were different? Do the holes in the firewall look factory punched or did they looked like they were drilled? I wonder if the CC's were ordered without and were added where they were converted? I'm just fishing as they say............
On another note, I just ordered factory paint chip charts for 60-66 to help solve the previous arguements on paint codes in other postings.
The front steel casing is very similar but not exactly the same as a 65 66 with the blower motor into the passenger compartment
The rear steel casing was a entirely different stamping from the 65 66 unit nor does it match the 64 down unit.
the fiberglass part also was slightly different in how it mounted.
It is held to the firewall by four 1/4 20 mounting studs in a square pattern. There is another stud that goes into a hole at the trans hump.
My fire wall had the holes stamped into them for the mounts. but it does not have any provisions for mounting a battery box.
The cab is a Crown Steel Products Company conversion, and was made for ford of canukland. Orignally sat on a F250 4x4 chassis.
My cab has a pre 65 oval pull vent on the drivers side and a triangular lever open vent on the passenger side. My dash is dimpled but no hole for the air vent cable on the passenger side.
I have found that the F350s and up used this thru 66 on the cabs along with most of the four by fours that utilitized the early cab on 65 and 66 trucks.
I took my heater core to NAPA, but they only go back to '65, as well as other parts houses. Drawings in my catalogs show a different style core as well. I took it to a radiator shop, who measured it, but he quoted me a C-note to rebuild it. Thanks for the leads, Barry I'll give them a call. My fan seems to have bad bearings too. Might as well rebuild the whole thing, eh?
My `62 fan motor was making noise, too, like a bearing. I took it apart and greased the bushings real good, put it back together and it's quiet as a church mouse.
