i have a 91 f350 4x4 with the dual piston calipers. the right caliper sticks once in a while. i was wondering if there is a way to clean up the caliper to prevent this or if i am just as well off to buy a new one.
The slides will bind if they are dirty/rusted etc, you can clean them and lube with disc brake grease. If you disassemble the brakes make sure of how the caliper pins came out they only go in one way.
I just went through this with my old '79 F350 gasser, and am about to do it with my diesel. With my gasser, the caliper failed while coming down a mountain road, and at the bottom of the mountain the master cylinder gave out (after I'd come to a stop fortunately). Yes, I had to change my shorts
With due respect to the poster above me, I take the opposite opinion that brakes are cheap, and are a safety device, so just replace what's failing. While it may cost a few more bucks, it takes just as much time to replace a failing caliper as to lubricate it.
