I just had a thought. I have a 2003 Superduty PSD. I am going to flush and fill this weekend with Shell Rotella ELC. The problem I have is this. What type of water do I use. I have a deep well for my water at home. The water inside the house is run through a water softener, which leaves a little sodium in the water. The faucets that run outside are straight from the well, which is high in iron content. Which water should I use to fill my cooling system?? Should I go out and get bottled/distilled water to avoid the iron and sodium? Do I need to?
I would go out and buy De-ionized water, this is about as pure as you are going to get. Distilled water will also work well. It is imperative that you do not use well water because of all the deposits. I worked on a farmer's '88 F250 and nearly smoked the 460 to a coolant leak in the intake and timing cover due to corrosion from well water.
DO NOT use well water. Espically water that is treted with salt. You dont need to get de-ioniezdd water. Distilled water is what you want and is cheap. It has not minerals or anything in it. Using well water will cause problems that you wont notice now, or even a few months from now. But in a couple years, I guarnette youll notice it.
There is a difference in pH between deionized water and distilled water. The deionized water is about a 6 pH while distilled water is closer to the neutral pH of 7. You will avoid some corrosion problems by using distilled or bottled spring water that contains an analysis sheet showing the sodium concentration.
