My 95 F150 4x4 w/5.8 eng is shifting in and out of overdrive (OD). I've noticed when this happens, the temp guage drifts down, it shifts out of OD, then the check eng light comes on. After a few minutes, the temp guage comes up, it shifts back into OD, and the eng light goes off. I've changed the thermostat and temp sensor, but it still acts the same.
Anybody know what is causing the fluctuating temp which is making my OD to go in and out?

Is it only doing this during warm-up when you first start out? And how cold is it where you are?
Why I am asking is if you have a cooling problem like this, and say it was the thermostat, then usually the OD would be delayed a little bit, but the engine would finally warm up enough to kick the OD in. I can't figure out why the engine would cool off so quickly, unless it was very cold where you are driving it, or engine hasn't warmed up yet.
Also, what degree thermostat did you install? I would put the original one called for by Ford. Get one too cold, and it could make the computer do this. I think what is happening is the computer is going in and out of closed loop operation.
This problem seems to have gotten worse with the warmer weather here in Michigan. No problems during warm-up. I put in a 195 stat, same as orig. However, I don't believe the engine temp is actually changing once it's warmed up. I think it is an electrical/sensor problem giving a false indication which is kicking the OD in and out. Or, I may just have a poor ground connection somewhere. I would start cleaning all these connections if I knew where to look.
If this is a possiblity, does anybody have a wiring diagram for this model/year that would show the grounds for the engine/trans controls?
Thanks for helping me try to figure this one out....
