A friend of mine has a 2001 extended cab shortbox with the tow package, and the passenger side rear axle seal is starting to leak. The local parts store said that there are two different sizes. How does he determine which size he needs if the tag on the axle is gone. It has the 5.4 and is a 4X4.
he is refering to the 8.8 axle vs the 975. the 8.8 is the "std" duty axle which is also used on rangers as i understand, and the 975 is a bit heavier duty axle used under most 5.4's. you can identify it by looking at the bottom area, it is wider , very noticeable, kind of looks like a F250 axle. the 8.8 has a more symetrical hsg. i'm sure this is what he's asking about. if you start looking under these trucks , youll see the diff. (just from a few feet away- you dont have to crawl under the truck.) pr
Never say all F150's w/ 5.4's have the 9.75.... you have to check the tag on the rear itself to know if you have the 9.75 or the 8.8.... the 8.8s are common enough in the 5.4 equipped trucks to warrant a crawl under the truck. A third rear could be the 10.25, but only if you have the 7700 option.

Take it back.... I'm telling....
Seen them on non-4wd S'crews with 5.4s. Dave (Racerguy) has found them in a few F150s with 5.4s during working hours. Seems like no rhyme or reason, just like the auto trannies. '97-'01 F150s with 5.4s could come with 4R70Ws or 4R100s, only the Lightning was garanteed to have the 4R100.
