Well, I think my OD in the a4ld finally went south. I can start off in drive but not in the od position. The trans shifts perfect in the drive position with a good downshift into the passing gear. I can get it into overdrive if I shift into it at around 55mph, but when I slow down to a stop and go to accelerate again it just revs like it is in neutral until I shift it back into drive. When it is in overdrive it doesnt down shift into the passing gear. It only revs like it is in neutral. I checked the fluid and it was right where it should be (between the holes when cold). I dont have any leaks and the modulator was just replaced a few months ago. Is this an issue I can take care of under the van? Is this trans difficult to rebuild? Could any transmission gurus out there give me some much needed valuable advice? Thanks.
...and that's where I gave my beloved '93 to a family that lived in town, not needing OD.
It had 230K miles when OD died, my trusted transmission guy at Cottman (yes, there are some good folks working at chain shops...) and I decided together that the cost of repair or replacement exceeded the value of the vehicle. We gave it to a deserving family to replace their 70s vintage Ford station wagon. Last I heard it had 300K on the clock, starting to rust but still running strong.
I guess I felt there came a time it just wasn't worth the battle, especially given that I also owned a '97 A*.
I had the exact same problem, then it cleared (thought to be some grit in the solenoid that selects OD, it was like to box had overheated, at present th van is fine in 1-2-3 so it's used in D, however it was cheaper to but another wreck of a van and swap the gearbox's, sorry but it probably needs to come out.
maybe not...mine is doing the same. but....it's only started doing it after I pulled the valve body for cleaning (lot's of material in pan). believe, at least in my case, a sticking valve might be the culprit. I remember a valve being somewhat sticky, and if memory serves, it WAS the 3-4 valve. goes to show how touchy these things are. now if I can just get the time to drop the pan and rectify it, all will be well again. at least until I get the time to do the full rebuild.
BTW the tech manual is a must have for worry-free (well almost worry-free) tranny work, especially doing anything besides fluid/filter changes.
which brings up the point...have you dropped the pan yet? if so, did you have any debris in the pan? this would be a better diagnostic than guessing at this point. please let us know what you find. or if you need any help with instructions for dropping the pan.
Hi my 1991 4.0 V6 did the same think, I dropped the pan and valve body (you have to, to be able to replace the OD solenoid) be very carefull when removing the valve body dont drop it or spill it as there is loads off little springs and ball bearings that can fall out. You will need valve body gaskets and reverse housing O rings. It is a little fiddley but it can be done from axle stands. After I did mine my tranny shop told me they would have done it for $85 plus the parts which if I had known about I would have let them do it.
Well the wife pretty much decided it was time to cut the old reliable van loose. I sold it as is to some construction workers who said three gears was enough. This forum sure helped in the upkeep of this well used but not abused cruise vessel. Thanks for all your input.
