MarlboroKlingon here, just updated my name to better reflect some personal issues..
As some of you may remember, my '93 XL suffered an indignant death when its timing chain popped a couple weeks ago.
I was browsing CraigsList and found an '87 automatic for sale for $500. Other than some fading paint and a few minor dents, it appears to be in excellent cosmetic condition for its age.
I called the owner and she said it is in good running shape and that everything in it except for the A/C works, which probably just needs a recharge. (I can live without that though..). She also said the registration and smog is current , and they are in fact still driving it while it's for sale.
I asked her if it had the 4 or 6 cylinder engine, she said 6, so that's good. She also mentioned that the transmission was rebuilt by Ford about a year ago and is in good shape.
Best of all, according to her, it only has in the area of about 121,000 miles.
I think you may have a good deal The only thing good about smog tests is that they give you great insight into the engines basic health. You know valves seal well, computer is taking good care of the housekeeping and fuel injection is healthy. If the cosmetics are reasonable, go for it. I can fix a broken crank but torn seats or cracked dashboards mess me up
Searching,
good find...I would enjoy a floor shifter again...
Aero's for sale are rare here...service shops buy them all...see Eddie Bauers full of greasy tools and pipe
glad to see you back with another Aero
maybe I will buy that new AeroII in '08 made by Ford/Shanghai

I bought my '93 "extended" a few years ago for $500. It was listed as having 150K miles and a bad tranny, but other than that, was perfect. The van would not move on it's own power. I towed it home and checked the tranny oil. It wasn't dark, but it was low. I even bought a tranny overhaul kit, thinking that I knew what my job was going to be for the next day or two. Then I got to thinking........... It had a slight leak on the pan gasket, which caused the fluid level to be low. I bought a tranny filter and changed the oil. It shifted GREAT!! The reason I didn't check the tranny for low fluid when I purchased it is because I bought it from a supposedly reputable mechanic that told me that the tranny was shot. I just took his word on that. That was 50K miles ago and it still works great. So I think you probably found a good one. Time will tell.
$500 is a fairly good deal. Complain about the A/C and see if they will go for $300. Broken A/C systems never "just need a recharge." They usually go bad because of leaks or busted compressors. At least that's my experience. Every used cars I bought, I was handed that same line, and my response has always been, yeah, right!!!!!
But then, it's only expensive if you take it to a mechanic. If you are reasonably dextrous, fixing the A/C system is much easier than changing plugs on these beasts On the other hand, you live in the Bay area, and it's cold year round, you don't need A/C. On the third hand, , if you live in the San Jose, Santa Clara area, either you have A/C or you die in the summer
the THIRD hand, copper?
nice to "see" you again, marlboro, and yes that definately looks to be a great deal. copper does have a valid point on the A/C, but if, as you say, you can live without it, doesn't seem to be a problem.
Come on now Copper, vehicle a/c systems always leak a bit at the shaft seal, it is possible to be low on r whatever. Mine was just a bit low, the rear a/c worked but the front didnt. seller told me a hose was plugged. Just a bit of r-12 and all was well, that was two years ago.
A/C systems usually can last 10, 12 years without a recharge. If a recharge is all it needs, and I am the seller, I'll charge it before I sell. If I go buy a used car, and the refrigerant is all gone, and the owner tells me all it needs is a recharge, someone is usually lying. But then, it was just my personal experiences.
That does look like a good deal for the price, just make sure you get the receipts for the tranny, and anything else they might have done.
I noticed that the driver seat is ripped (very normal for most Areos with that age/millage) no biggie, and the body damage does not concern me too much besides the sliding door. It might not be aliagned correctly so double check that.
The carpet looks like it could use a good cleaning, but no biggie.
Definitely a good choice from what I have seen so far.
Ford does know how to put on paint, that pretty beige still has good shine after almost 20 years in the Cali. sun. color must have been avail only in early Aero's, have never seen one that shade of beige-nice color for hot sun area
good basic transportation and definitely has more room in the back for passengers and luggage than one of the rice wagons
a GMC would be down to primer and rust.

Don't sweat about that side door. My wife did that to our Aerostar 2 weeks after we got it from the dealer, brand new. She side-swiped the concrete filled steel post at the local Sam's club. No damage to the post, but did that to the van. We just left it that way for all these years, and it still looks the same. The owner of this van must have graduated from my wife's driving school
Xuzme, I knew you were joking, and it didn't come across the wrong way

cool copper. I know that typing isn't the same as conversing and sometimes things said in jest come across wrong when written. I am an easy going guy and would hate to upset someone by an ambiguity on my part.
my wife must have also attended your wife's driving school. she evidently has a game she plays where curbs are evil and must die. she also seems to use the braille method frequently when parking. and that's precisely why she doesn't drive the aero.
