I work from my truck with a laptop and lexmark 510 printer and I tried the splitter for the power point but I never found one that I liked. As I am a non-smoker (except the occasional cigar), I have no use for the ashtray. Check my gallery and let me know what you think of the two additional power points using the ashtray face as the mounting point. I put them under the lip (handle) so that they are for the most part not seen. Works like a charm. I can plug my inverter into the factory power point, the printer into one of the others, and charge my nextel (used as a modem) all at the same time. Very little draw and total convenience. Now for the refridgerator and grill? Hmmm.............
They are wired into an auxilary fuse panel. I had run power from the battery to the 12 position panel (from Advance Auto Parts) and have 1/2 the openings set up to operate key on only and 1/2 hot all the time. Semper Fi! Class of 68.
That looks pretty spiffy. For a while now, ive thought of mounting my 400 wat power inverter where the ash tray is so i could plug my laptop directly into that) If my measurments are correct, it should fit and all i should have to do is make a bracket to mount it. Just one more project on my list
Actually, I thought about a non plug in power inverter that would fit the tray, and pull out, keeping the original dash look and having a pull out/AC plug in point at my disposal. The advent of the direct to DC plug in power for the printer made the power points the way to go for me.
Hey Tex,
You made me laugh with an old memory... when my kids were little I told them the power point cover was to turn on the super power booster. So anytime one of them accidently flipped it up, I floored it. Ahh.. the good ol' days
Absolutely, Tim. Just like the old saying "***** to the wall!" (now don't censor this just yet), comes from water/alcohol injected Rolls-Royce Merlin engines in fighter aircraft from WWII. The Ball shaped throttle had a hairpin type clip about 1/2" from the end to denote "full throttle". If you slammed it "***** to the wall" it kicked in the injection which would go for 8-10 seconds (more would probably melt bearings) to get you out of a life threatening jamb. Sorry, old guy reminiscing. Have a great weekend.
