Just bought a Fram quick drain oil plug that I found while I was looking for a Fumoto quick drain plug at the auto parts store. Looked like it would work very nicely for half the price. Has anyone here used one of these before and did you like it or not?
I seen them look it up and it came up for the 7.3 PSD. They had several sizes and it was the #2 size. I will be able to tell you for sure after I put it on Friday. I sure hope it drains at a greater speed than Superrangerman2002 had with his. We will see.
On my 460 it worked well, but they do drain slow. There just isn't much opening. They do keep your hands cleaner, though you still have to deal with the filter mess. All in all not bad for the money. I also wonder how long it would take to drain the diesel.
Bought one for the wife's car and it drained so slow, I swore dead people could run faster. So I put the old plug in. Positive on it was that it was clean.
I had 2 of them and found out they are called Sure drains for a reason, cause the Sure drain slowwwwwwwww. A normal 10 minute oil change on the 4cyl neon I used to have jumped up to 30 minutes because it took so long to drain. I took them off both the vehicles I had them on. I would like to try the fumoto but am afraid it will be slow also.
I have one on the 94 F350 and I did have to match up my own threads, the book was wrong or the truck was. Yes it is slow, the warmer the oil the better, but it is alright with me. I will let it drain while I go do other things like mess with the filter. It is alot cleaner is the main reason I got it. I change my oil about once a month and had already stripped out one plug from taking it in and out so much, not any more. I have 340,000 miles on the truck so thats alot of changes.
Cowboy350, What threads did you come up with? I did get all of the thread sizes for the Sure Drain plugs (there are only 5). Can you tell me which one I need?
The sizes that they come in is:
1/2 X 20
14mm X 1.5
12mm X 1.25
12mm X 1.75
18mm X 1.5
Shoot......I think it was 1/2 x 20 but I'm not positive. The book I think said the 12mm but it didn't work. Mine was a 94 non-turbo so yours is more than likely different for the PSD. The best way is to do it on a day when you can run back to town if you have too. Pull the plug, drain the oil, and check your OEM plug with the new one. If it's not the same you go get the right one while your oil drains, thats what I had to do.
Get the the one the book calls for or even check with Ford before you by it and just see what happens. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
qfd90, i have a 2001 and changed oil yesterday, was a 18mm. dont know about an 02 but the next time i WILL get one for i made a huge (approx 5-7qt.) mess. forgot to take out the drain opening in my drain pan, man it was a scramble. should have been documented for americas funniest home videos.
Well I did a little research and found that my 2002 has a 14mm with 1.25 threads. So none of the Fram plugs work on mine. I took it back. The only other type I know of is the Fumoto valve. It is twice the money, but I think it is the only other way to go.
my dads 02 1500 cheby has one, and even for that 5 quarts its slow, but kinda nice not having to mess with pullin the plug and spilling and burning and what not.
