Engine id help

just pulled the flathead out of my 41 truck and am trying to work out what year and specs it has - the head has EAC-6049-B cast into it - i'm thinking it is a 52-53 merc but not entirely sure - any body able to tell me what the 6049-b [part means

You're right on the 52/3 merc. 6049 is the part number for a late series right hand head. The left side should read EAC-6050. The 'B' is just a series upgrade as far as I know.

From what I've seen the 8BA, 8RT and 8CM all have a similar cc volume and flow about the same. Your engine should run fine that way.
