The wife drives a 96 ford escort 1.9l. The check engine light has been coming on. It reads a p1443 or sometimes a p1445 code. I have replaced everything that I know of. first the charcoal canister then purge valve then a little black sensor next to purge valve. all lines seam to be connected. Its got me stumped. are the valves or sesors in the tank?
- gas caps are critical to this type of system, they act as a check valve allowing air into the tank while gas is being consumed, while at the same time prohibiting any vapors from escaping out. The cap acts as a seal until a certain vacuum level is reached, at which time air is allowed to pass in. Aftermarket or damaged caps will cause codes.
- there is a line that runs from the fuel tank to the EVAP cannister. Where the line attaches to the tank there is a small valve assembly that pushes into a rubber grommet. Maybe something is messed up at that junction.
I have never fixed it on an Escort, but, on the Taurus etc. the valve sits on the pass. firewall and if you test the lines it is usually the lines that are crushed, bad, or broken at a connection and not the actual EVAP that is bad. Sometimes they can just be clogged. You can buy the kits with the little rubber elbows at Autozone etc.
