which ratio:4.56's or 4.88's

ok i cant decide, i want to run a 38-40 tire for dirt than somthin like a 35" BFG for DD (yes im stupid, my truck is still DD)

as it sits i have been running 4.56s with my current 33's (acuall mesurment is 31.4-5) and turn around 2400rpms going 65,

id like my final setup to be below that above rpm but i dont want to be lugging around 4D's with too little gearing. im running a 351w/AOD Drivetrain combo and am just trying to be nice to both my motor and tranny under both conditions.

what do you think? my buddy thinks 4.56 is just not enough for 38s (probably SX's) i know its all choppy, but i got to order the gears and bearings tomarow. any ideas?

There may be a carrier break at 4.56.

Mark's got a good point. Some differentials have a different carrier for certain gear ratios above a certain point. If your rig was older with a 9", you'd have no problems, but with an 8.8 (assume) you might be better off calling someone like Randy's R&P and find out. It might be more cost effective to just keep the 4.56s than to buy a new carrier. If your D44 already has 4.56s than you're OK to change to 4.88's...you're already above the split.

I don't have any advice as far as the ratio goes....I still run 4.10s with 49 inch tires. Wait! That's my advice. DON'T DO WHAT I'M DOING!!

i guess it would have been helpful for me to mention that my bronco has a D60 front ant 14bolt rear huh?

but you guys are right, the carrier break is an issue because 4.88 gears in a standard cut for the 14b are exspensive!!! im gonna go to the local pic and pull and get myself a 410 and down carrier so i can run a thick cut gear instead. plus i have to go through the back axle anyways becasue it gives a nice hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm at freeway speeds.

I think im going to go with the 4.88s, with moving up to a 35" tire it shouldnt be higher RPMs than what im running now. plus then i have the gettup and go for those big old TSLs i want to run

oh yeah BTW cody, thanks for reminding me how much i wish i had a powerstroke

The old PSD doesn't like 4.10s with 49's.......gutless turd.
The reason I still run the 4.10s is because I like to know that I can still put on my 265/75s and cruise down the highway at 75 MPH. If I had 5.13 or lower, the truck would be a turtle with the stock tire size. Talk about grunt though.....
