Earlier today, while collecting sap for maple syrup on a buddys property, i came across an old F-750 single axle dump. Naturally I was curious as to what i would find under the hood, and as best i can tell its an FE with a two barrel carb. Now, i've heard of internal differences between the usual car/light truck motors, and the heavy truck motors, (like being referred to as 361, 391 ci), so what might those diffences be? Also, has any one ever swapped one into a pickup? I imagine theyd be quite the torque monsters, (within reason of course). Any thoughts/experiances?
FT motors as they're called, are interesting pieces to be sure. Here's the deal:
Larger crank snout, different cast iron timing cover.
Heads with small valves and ports to promote air velocity and increase torque, bad for horsepower.
Large full sump oil pan.
Carb's usually have governor's.
Usually have a forged crank, good for racing and HD use.
Block with reinforced main webs, higher strength iron.
Larger oil pump drive shaft.
Larger distributor, usage of an FE distributor requires a bushing in the block.
Heads and intake with exhaust heating.
Good find to be sure, but it'd take a little extra work to make it a good running FE engine. I suppose you could swap it in a light duty truck as is, but dont expect horsepower. Do expect a brute low end torque truck engine, with low compression, that will live nearly forever.
Well Just to show you how much Torque and Gearing those things have.. I was working for a trucking Company driving a Semi....and in the yard one day a kid was showing some other guys how slow this F700 went in reverse...he was showing off..and a couple of us called him down about what he was doing (he was the Boss's kid) well the truck was rolling along in the yard by its self..and the kid was jumping back and forth in and out of the cab... well the truck got to close to the Brick wash bay...and the kid couldnt get back in the cab.....the truck took out 30' of the brick wall on the bay before stoping!!! LOL!!!!
my dad had a '71 F-750 and had a 361 and a 5spd, no 2spd rear and he had a utility body on it it. the truck weighed 8 tons and flat towed a tractor trailer with a combined total weight of the tractor and trailer being 21 tons! the clutch was never the same after that, but the sight of that big 8 ton truck hauling 21 tons with a 361 and a 5spd just shows how a Ford can pull more thans its own weight.
Well, sounds like quite the find anyway... I dont expect it'll go anywhere any time soon, but if i ever need another motor, itll be there i expect. come to think of it, the distributor did look taller, and the heads and exhaust manifolds looked kinda funny on first inspection, going right along with rusty70f100's comments.Maybe itll turn into a swap project someday. We'll see...
