i looked it dont look like those ones it looks kinda like a top loader but the top loader spot as a plate bolted to it and the shifter is on the side od the tranny it looks like a small starter or something and the tranfer case has a big metal thing that mounts to both sides of the tranny its got like a funny center section between the tranny and transfer case seems this is where the shifting may be done for the transfer case

Forget about the transfer case for now. Some of the transmission shown on that page are 2wd, some are 4wd. Doesn't change the basic ID of the trans itself.

If you have a 4 speed overdrive, it is probably one of the first three. Note that only the SMOD is show. Read the descriptions for the next two - the SROD and TOD. If you have an 85, it is probably the TOD.

Edit: Sorry, I think the trans shown is the SROD, not the SMOD. Not 100% sure.

The one in the picture is the SROD. Note the tube extending back from the side of the trans. At the back end of that tube, there is a turret and the shifter mounts there.

The top shifted units have the shifter on the top of the trans--the tin plate on top is replaced by the shifter mount set up.

The side shifted units have external linkage and shift arms out the side--you can see the holes in the castings in the picture. The side shifted units have 3 shifter arms out the side.

The center section between the trans and the TC is the TC adaptor.

The '86 truck, what trans does that have in it.

A Cleveland motor? Did you install that?

sorry bout the caps the tranny is wineing real bad in all gears except third. i belive bearings as well when its in neutral and i let the clutch oout it really wines bad like the bearings are coming apart..
the tc wont go int 4 wheel drive at all ..and before that it would not stay in 4 high it would jump out and if it did stay in about evry half mile or so it would make a huge clunk as if the chain or something was sliping and the truck would feal like it was lifting off the ground

Its an SROD. My truck has the same pattern for reverse and its an SROD. Look at the shifter housing on the drivers side rear. Is it mounted on an external extension on the side of the case? I am sure it is. SROD

Rebuild kits are available. Are you comfortable rebuilding a trans?

I was quoted $500 for a rebuild if I carried mine in to a local trans shop.

As for the TC, not sure what's going on there, but it sounds like an inspection is in order.

The '86 trans--is that also a 4 speed OD?
