360 punched 30 over

hi--

i'm looking at a '71 F250 that came with a 360 (based on the VIN tag). the engine is advertised as "a 360 punched 30 over". what does this mean?

thanks.

That means that at some point in it's past, someone rebuilt it and had the cylinders overbored .030". I'd treat it the same as any other used car / truck. See how it runs and go from there.

i'm mainly wondering what it means in terms of gas mileage. it sounds like it each cylinder has been made larger, so it's basically like a larger cid engine. is that true? if so, what size engine would it be comparable to, just in terms of size. i tried to do the math, but couldn't come up with anything that seems to make sense.

With a bore increase of .030" over stock 4.050" you have 4.080". Bore squared x .7845 = piston area x 3.5" stroke X 8 = 366 cid. Besides a slight compression increase and a fresh motor you will not feel the displacement increase over stock.

Well, it's a .030 over FE motor. Take pi, multiply by 100, divide by all the cash in your wallet, send the money in your checking account to Shell and enjoy.

Mileage will be somewhere between bad and real bad.

The .030 over bore makes little difference in the mileage. The fact that its a 50 year old motor design, goes against getting decent mileage. Properly tuned with the right gears, a light foot, a tail wind, running on rocket fuel you might get 15mpg.

I love these FE motors.

As was mentioned above...the motor was rebuilt, find out from the owner how long ago it was rebuilt....As Carl said..the .030" over bore you wont even feel that in the seat of your pants...

And as Kurt said...treat it just like it was the 360, and as far as gas Mileage goes..it cant be any worse than the 390 (396) in my truck..10 miles to the gallon , Uphill, downhill, Camper on , Camper off...pulling a boat, not pulling a boat..driving with a Tornado behind me...10 milesto a gallon no matter what!!

Thanks! I'll be satisfied with just bad mileage. I'm trying to avoid really bad, or really, really bad mileage. I've got a '78 F250 now with a 460 and it is killing me. I'm selling that and looking for a '69 - '72 cause that's the style I really want. But also, I'm hoping a smaller engine will help a bit on the mileage.

Does anyone think there is much difference in mileage-- all other things being equal-- between a 360 & a 390? How about a 390 & a 460? I've been hoping to find the truck I want with a 360, but I'm wondering if I should really be worrying if it has a 360 or a 390?

The one I'm looking at now claims to be getting 12+ since rebuilding the 650 Holly 4 barrel.

My 2 cents: Given a properly tuned engine, appropriate gearing and tires and similar driving style, the same weight and aerodynamics, you won't see much variation from in mileage from a 300 I6 up to a 460.

Find the truck that you like, tune the motor correctly, drive reasonably. 12-15 MPG is common for most every full size Ford I've owned (excluding the current FE446 project).

And that's bad mileage Greg???? If this pickup you are looking at is a 3/4 ton (F-250) 4x4 you might want to swap the frontend from your 79 into the pickup you are looking at.

I agree that when loaded and working the engine your milage will be about the same for all engines, but there is a big differance when you are empty and running down the highway.

My experance has been about 19 MPG with a six-4 speed, 21 MPG with 302-3 speed and overdrive, and 14 MPG with the 390-C6. I have never owned a 460, but when running with friends who do my 390 gets about 20% better mileage.

I don't think you will see any differance between a 360 and a 390 in normal driving.

Just depends, both of my fathers said that their 360's got better mileage than their 390's. One had a 73 F-100 4x4 C6 and the other had a 73 or 74 F-100 2x4 4-speed.

Most of the older 460's couldn't break 10mpg on the highway. My Dad a 76 1/2 ton 2wd and the best he got was 9. Go like stink though, pass everything but the gas station. My old boss had a 78 1/2 ton 2wd for a work truck. Man that thing was so bad on fuel I could watch the needle move. My 390 isn't tuned, runs like crap, needs everything replaced, has 4.10 gears, 4 spd and is 4x4....still get 11mpg on highway. A 360 should be better than a 460. Especially if you get it to breath, put headers on it.
