I was pulling a tree out of the yard today and put it in 4x4 so I wouldn't dig up the lawn. Before going onto the street again I disengaged it. There was a whining coming from the tranny so I reengaged and disengaged again. Went around a corner and tried it again, this time there was a hugely disturbing clunk and a jolt, after which it was in normal 2h again.
Any thoughts? I'm almost afraid to use 4x4 again because I dont want to have to go out and pick up my tranny off the street
Try going into 4x4 then moving a few ft then disengaging and see how it does. Could be with using it to pull the tree, it had alot of pressure to one direction and it just jolted back out instead of releasing easily. If you get the same klunk again, could be time to have the t-case checked out.

It's the turn dial 4x4.
With not even 21500 miles on it there should be no issues. I'll wait until it rains this week and try engaging/disengaging again.
My 4L also kicks and clunks when I engage and disengage. The 4H only clicks, sounds like a small actuator and it comes from the front of the dash. I think a clunk for 4L is pretty normal, because the transfer case is not only engaging the front drive, but it's also shifting into lower gears.
