I'm not sure what the redline is, but it stops making any real power after about 3500. Not much point in taking it up higher. Mine spins nice and easy to 3500.
I dunno for shifting to make your gears happy i usually shift just be4 4k at about 3900 it does stop making power at about 3500 but, my gears aren't very happy shifting at that low of rpm and still not boggin in the next gear. it depends i suppose on your gears, tranny, tires and how the engine is built. Although i would say never rev over the 4k point on a stock 300-6 i beleive there true redline is like around 5k but, it sounds horribly bad and can't be good on your engine (only did this once.)

Just curious, what size tires and gears are you running? I have a granny four speed, 3.08 gears and 31's and I shift at about 2200 with no problem.
i don't realy notice mine falling on its face till like 4k maybe it's stupidity but, this is just me. I run a stock motor except no cats and decent flowing exhaust i run 35in tires with a double granny tranny i shift outa 3rd at 41 mph at 2500 rpms it's pretty low geared.... i run 3.50 gears. i seem to scoot petty well in my opinion for lugging 35 in tires. My 0-55 is decent enuff and i can actually spin these tires 12.5 wide in 1st and sum in 2nd and once in a blue moon in 3rd with ls. I'd estimate it's 0-55 at possibly 12 secs as my best guess in a full size 1977 f150 4x4 (5500lbs ish). so it's respectable enough considering new trucks 0-60 is like 10.... I dunno don't take much advice from me except for generalizations unless i say most definetly i know what i mean because,
i hate my f-150 and im at tearing things with wheels and a motor up. what can i say.... that's kinda how i want my truck to look with the flame and all lol. it's demise will be swift and quick or i'll sell it soon.
Wow that was a lot of blabbering don't worry about anything towards the botoom the useful stuff is at the top.
try to keep it in the low rpms if possible, the long stroke is hard on the cylinders and pistons. stock gearing is a +@($$*, needs close ratio 5 speed to really be happy.
