Sure have, its that way with everything, the local "Joes auto shop" will always be friendllier then the ultra-giant Autozone or Advanced, I do like going to Napa though, very attractive young lady at the counter there, its worth the trip to the other side of town. =)
I recently was looking for an expansion valve for the a/c on my 35 year old car and checked all the autoparts stores in town. I started with napa because they usually have hard to find parts. I did not check with auto zone, because I figured there was no way they would have it. After not having any success, and everybody telling me the part was no longer available. For the heck of it, I went down to auto zone, and they had the part in stock. Go figure?
We just got an Autozone in town last year. I've slowly going to them for parts instead of Advanced Auto. Sunday I went to Autozone for front/rear brake shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and brake hoses for my 1963 Ford Falcon. They had every part in stock except the hoses and they beat Advanced Auto prices by $40.00 if they would have had them in stock.
I went to auto zone again today, they had a flywheel for my 70 ford in stock and it was forty-three dollars, car quest wanted 200.00 and had to order it.
Car Quest is at the bottom of the barrel on quality vs Auto Zone and Kragen here in Kaliforna ("I be back"). I go to a family run "Word Famous Lee Auto" in town, ordered a rear drum for a 68 CS. It was US made, balanced perfect and machine finished better than Ford's in 68. I got lucky on that one. Replaced a water pump (FE) by Car Quest, the gasket was folded on the rear pump cover, this leak found while adding coolant pissing on my shoes. AC, PS fan shroud fan removed again. But sir it's a lifetime part. Do it once with quality parts, not made in China or assembled in Mexico please.
Checker Auto Parts is the worst! Half of the stuff you buy there, they give you a number and you have to remember it and go track down the parts you want. Well, I got my thermostat and gasket, which turned out to be the biggest pieces of crap ever. I gave up and went to the ford dealer ($$$), but now we have an Auto Zone so I am happy. Don't buy anything from checker except oil and winshield wiper blades.
