Lightbulb internal and external balancing

My friend just got a 77 460 from a lincoln. He needs a flywheel for it. I guess there is a difference in flywheels depending on balancing. How can you determine if its an internal or external. balanced engine.

If it is a 77 it should be internal. Look at the spacer behind the harmonic balancer. If it is smooth the motor is internal balanced. If it has a big hatchet looking weight on it the motor is external balance.

your are not wrong, but to clarify they were all internally balanced up until 78. 79 model year was the first to be externally balanced.
