Heh ya'll ... Yes I'm from Georgia. I'm running a AOD tranny along with a 5.0 out of an '86 Lincoln in my Project '69 F-100. The transmission is the problem so I hope this is the right message board.
The transmission went through a $1200 rebuild one year ago and has worked well until about 4 months ago. Kind of "out of the blue" it started giving me trouble in the mornings. Until the truck had gone 4 or 5 blocks running about 3000 R.P.M. it would not shift into second. Once in second, it would take another 4 or 5 blocks to make it into 3rd (OD has not been a problem). If I came to a stop within the first mile or two the engine would drag down to almost stall (around 400 R.P.M.) and then a muffled pop, as if the torque converter had been locked up, and the engine would recover. Once warmed up... NO PROBLEMS.
I have just begun a "re-restoration' (had a fender bender) so the engine and transmission are out. I was planning to take it to a shop when I found this site.
I'm not real smart on the tech stuff when it comes to transmission but in these last few months I have heard things like... change the fluid, it's the torque converter, and "I think your governor is the problem".
Cliff, the aod trans has selonoids on the valve body I had trouble with one before and the trans man told me that the valve body and selonoids varnish up common problem with ford automatics most of the time they can just be cleaned and reinstalled I had the trans shop do mine and one selonoid was bad they changed it cleaned the valve body and it was good for another 90,000 miles. Thanks Fatforty... I'll add the solenoid problem to have checked out when I take it in. Seems like they should be relatively clean on this rebuild unless the shop did a "dirty" job. Wouldn't surprise me... I had some trouble with them on the "survice" side of the deal too.
Got almost exactly the same problem with my 88 4x4. The only difference is that once mine shifts to second the other gears are fine. I have the same problem with it not wanting to down shift to. After it warm up it fine. The other guy mentioned selonoids. I know the electronic aod's probally have selonoids but mine is not controlled by the computer, does it have selonoids? All I see on the outside of the transmission is the TV cable. I have posted about this problem before and no one seems to know much about it. I changed the fluid even though the guy said it didn't need it and it did not help. If you figure this out let me know what you did, as you know this is very annoying.
Dunebuggys, when you changed the fluid you should have been able to see the selonoids in the drivers side of the valve body if you didn't see anything in there it doesn't have them and the valve body is probably just varnished up you can try trans medic or a similar product to see if it helps some times that dissolves the varnish and some times not but I would try it if it doesn't work it is only $3.00 down the drain.
