I currently own a 68 F100 Short Bed w/ a 390. Right now its got a Dana 44 out back and the Twin I-Beam up front. I just came along a Ford 9" for really cheap ($40). Granted it needs work, but it gives me the perfect opertunity to set it up how I would like. With that out back, what ways is there to update the front suspension w/ out spending too much. I am unfortunatly under a tight budget ( Good Ol' Uncle Sam ) and am buying as I can.
Any info would be awesome.
PS. Out of curiousity ( truck is back home in CA, im in NE ) anyone know the standard Lug pattern?
I ordered a set of urithane bushings for the front end of mine ('68 F-100) haven't had time to install them yet, but I have heard good things.....just keep them well lubed.
do a search and find the disk brake swap. this involves taking the front suspension from a disk brake equipped 73-79 F-100/150 and a few other pieces and directly replacing the front suspension of your '68. it is not a hard thing to accomplish, and can usually be done for under $200. this would also be a good time to put in those urithane bushings and possibly a Hellwig front sway bar.
pick up a copy of Truckin' magazine and check out the AIM/Chassis Tech ads, they have "dropped" I-beams, and other items for lowering/bagging/lifting. for a 3" front/5" rear drop it is going to cost me right at $1200 for all the parts. you may also consider DJM "DREAM BEAMS" as a less expensive alternative.
these old trucks are just that OLD (out dated technology) TRUCKS (definitively stated as a vehicle used to transport goods) with not much in the way of creature comforts. they were built tough, and to stand the test of time, and have done so very well. now you need to figure out which way you are headed.... restoration back to original.... resto mod.... custom..... pre runner (2wheel drive lifted with bigger tires).... low rider...... there are a million different ways to go about it, so have fun with it.
Thanks Ken! Helped me out a lot. I know what your saying, she has held together really well. I believe I already put the urithane bushing up front when I first got it. Ill have to look in my truckin magazines , since I am a subscriber for what you are talking about.
Im heading in the * Custom Street Rod * area it looks like. I want fast , but street and with all the technology. Thanks for your help!
I just picked up my rear-end today, and got it a bit torn apart. Took off the drums & pulled the axles out. They are 28 Spline from what I counted. I am currently tryin to find out what the identification tag means, any help..
