Hi Guys, First time here, i usually am in the 7.3 section.
anyways, my FIL is giving us his 2001 Expedition with 175k miles on it. He lives in CA and I in CO about 1100 miles away. he is coming out in a week or so with his BIG diesel pusher motorhome and has offered to haul it out here for me (he is a REALLY nice guy). So we are looking at options for towing behind his moho.
We can rent a dolly for $300 and put the drive wheels on the dolly and steer tires on the ground. Here is my question: is it a good idea or safe to tow this vehicle on the front tires for this distance?? Is this extra hard on the front wheel bearings, steering parts etc??? He only goes about 55-60mph in the moho. I am new to this tow dolly thing so please help.
If I had the time I would hook up my flat bed trailer, drive out there and haul it back but moma says no (we have a 10wk old at home )
I wouldn't tow backwards, just take the drive shaft off and pull, providing its a 2 wheel drive and use a towing dolly. A simple 15 minute process.
Once pulled, you'd probably have a leaking tranny once the yoke is pulled but let it drain, cover and seal with a plastic bag and your done.

Check the laws for your state. Many states don't allow this because it is an extremely unsafe way to tow. If the latch in the steering column fails the wheels will turn and take out any vehicles next to you. Like r2millers said, remove the drive shaft and put in on the dolly forward. Also, to use a dolly, the truck has to have a valid registration and insurance because 2 of the tires are still on the road. If you don't have both of those then you need a full car carrier so that all 4 tires are off the road. In such a case you of course would not need to remove the drive shaft.
Thanks guys for all the info. Talked to u haul and they said the expedition will work on the trailer. Trailer is $5something to rent so that is the way we will go. Much safer.
