I use a treadmill for "speed" walking. For added resistence I set the incline to 12% and I wear a 35 pound weight vest. It took me about a year to build up to the 35 pounds.
The treadmill allows me with watch tv or dvd which is a great distraction for an otherwise boring sort of workout.
I've run 4 miles...not all at once, but over the course of my life that sounds about right. Actually I used to run pretty seriously, then I got to where I had enough horses in training I was getting plenty of aerobic workout that way and didn't feel the need/have time to run. Now I've cut back on my riding so I'm working on talking myself into getting back into the running. It's cheaper than therapy and also saves the trouble of having to buy bigger chaps!
I run anywhere from 2-4 miles a day. But then again I'm in track and I have to. But I'm only doing it to condition before I go to Boot Camp for the Marine Corps!!!
I was never any good at running - but I have gone over 120 miles on a bicycle on a day trip.
Totally done in at the end, but I liked it! It was a pride thing...
Towards the end I stopped once in a while and grabbed a quart of buttermilk - it was good for 200 calories, and didn't last long. But it got me home.

PS: Keep two water bottles on your bike. When the first goes dry - GO HUNTING A FAWCET!!!
PPS: The last major ride I did was from Norfolk Virginia, to Kitty Hawk, South Carolina. That was in about 2003
Uh. I'm not sure if you realize just how fast a 7 minute mile is.....its not a a walk/run by any means. It's a brisk jog/run for the entire 7 minutes.
I'm a couch potato, but my other half is a very fast runner. And she runs about 7 minute miles. Although she generally does that for 3 to 26.2 miles at a time. (She'll be ruuning Boston in 2 weeks)
I've been trying to run an 8 minute mile pace for just a few minutes at the Gym lately. Try it, you'll see just how fast that is.
I jog 5 miles, I bike 10 miles every morning, then about three times a week I do it all again in the evening, and let me tell you I've never felt better.
