Trying to learn more about the 300. I'm new to them, but not to engines. I have a couple questions and I tried a search, but didn't find what I was looking for.
1st question I have is about pistons. I noticed while looking at the engine tech specs in my FRPP catalog that the 300 I6 and the 289/302 piston pin height is identical. They also share the same bore measurments. The big end of the rods is the same and I suspect the small end is the same as well. So it seems like any 289/302 replacement piston should be an option for the 300. Is that true?
2nd question is about the cylinder head. I tried searching for some specs on the combustion chamber volume for the different heads. But no luck. What volumes are there? Also how many different heads are their? Are all heads bolt down rockers? Stud mount rockers? Or some mixture of the two depending on the year? I was able to surmise that the EFI head has a smaller CC and a different chamber shape.
The big end of the rods is the same and I suspect the small end is the same as well. So it seems like any 289/302 replacement piston should be an option for the 300. Is that true?
Thanks.
No. FE352/360 and 351 windsor pistons are closer.
300 rods have 2 pin sizes. the older one (65-72) is the same as a 351W
Just in middle of performance rebuild. My engine rebuilder[every good and experienced] ordered 390 pistons....They are 4.050 so .050 overbore works .When looking specifically for forgred 300pistons options were very limited. Some showed them in catalogue ,but no stock. However these 390 forged are readily available and with a little work to fine tune C/R they should be good
