Starting 390 build on 15th, need advice!

I have ordered most of the parts but am wondering what else to get.
My '71 390 f-250 4x4 will be fitted with this so far:
-650 Edelbrock 4bbl
-4bbl Edelbrock intake
-Pertronix ignition and coil
-timing chain and gears
-new valve springs
-Hedman headers
-new lifters
-343941 cam
-Chrome valve covers
-Chrome water neck
-new plugs and wires

Should I put 360 pistons in it? I read somewhere here that they give more compression but may not clear the deck? I don't know what that means so that is why I am asking.
Should I send the heads out and get bigger valves or would stock valves work with this set up?
Any other suggestions that I may have missed please tell me before I put it all back together.I'll keep you posted on how it goes and try to get some pictures once I figure out how to get them from disc on to the forum.

Yes, put the 360 pistons in. They'll work fine. Mine came up with .012" deck clearance. You should have slightly more, since mine were TRW L2291's. You might have to spend some time tuning it though, as I've got about the same build and it does ping a little bit with anything but premium. Still working on that one, but I'm sure I'll get it worked out.

What type of Edelbrock 650 are you running? I tried to find an Edel Performer 650 but can't find one, only 500, 600, 750 and 800s. The Thunder Series is in a 650 but about $100 more than the performers.

Which intake are you planning to run? I think the RPM will better match that cam and higher compressin of the 360 pistons.

You know I am not sure about the intake and carb. I do have Edelbrock part numbers. The carb is #1806 and the manifold is #2105. Rusty you said you ping with anything but premium. Have you tried any octane boost or gas additives? I would have to look in the shed but the stuff I use made a noticeable difference in performance. I can smoke the 35's after I'm going about 10mph and stomp on it. I am going to price out the pistons today, if they don't run too high as to put me behind on my 'build' date I'll get them. What do you feel a ball park hp/torque amount could be had from this build?
Thanks for the advice guys I'm getting real excited!!!

Hey neighbor I was just your way yesterday on a hotshot. You got no snow!! We only have about a foot left to go. Some places in town are showing grass though so spring is soon here!!
So far this list is adding up to about, well I'll list it down for you:

650 carb 490.00
4bbl intake 419.00
crane cam 260.00
lifters 70.00
ignition 120.00
timing chain and gears 45.00
headers 290.00
plugs and wires 100.00
Pistons I haven't heard back from yet. So far about 1700.00 but that is rough because I rounded up and I will probably get my plug wires made. I haven't gotten a price back on valve springs yet either. I am told I should be around 350 hp for this build with the higher compression pistons. I was hoping to break closer to 400 but hell it'll still be good!! It should pull a few stumps with the 410 gears! I just priced out some 39.5's. Swamper tsl's for 1550.00 installed. I think I am gonna go with it in a month or so, just get the motor running good first. My '71 Muddbugg will be a sweet treat drive then!
What are you working on? Maybe we may run into each other one day soon!
Adam

You can get an Edel RPM intake for around $300 thru Jegs or Summit. And that seems steep for the carb as well, unless your getting a BG Demon or such.

Gtex, don't forget I am in British Columbia so that is Canadian dollars I have listed for the parts. If I convert to US funds then the intake is only 312.00 and the carb is 375.00

Just found a wholesale distributor in my area that saved me over 300.00 on parts!! Just the headers alone were 1/2 price. Carb was like 80.00 cheaper and so was the intake. I hate waiting for payday, why can't boss' give cash advances for priority issues like this. I mean doesn't he know that my truck needs to be fixed up? Hello?

Yeah man, the snow is gone....couldnt be happier. Time for some sun. And bike riding

Anyway, that aint to bad for all that stuff, I figured it would have been more.
Geez, where are you getting those tires man, i got my 39.5 tsl in alberta (G.P) i got ripped, payed over 2g's. But then again, i didnt get hooked up either, i was just some sucker.
I got that black 79 ford with a steel deck (black as well, and muddy) witht he 39.5's on er, you probably havent seen it if youve been here recently, im not driving it right now, gas is now 99.9 a litre, ridiculous.
Im starting with a 360 block, got it all hot tanked, but I found a truck with a 390 in it, so im waiting to see if i can get that truck then Ill rip out that 390 and build that one up.

I am pretty good friends with the manager of Kaltire here in town. We are doing the lift kit also. I have access to a running 390 from a 71 3/4 camper special, email me.
Did you run your truck last summer? I may have seen it. My son was glued to the Bronco window at a big black Ford downtown John. He was freakin' at how 'cool' it was. Gotta love him, I raised him right.
I go to UFA for my fuel and use the house card. It's only 88 cents a litre like that, or you could go to the pump and pay 1.12 a litre for premium!!
