Hey guys, i've seen some similar posts on this before but i'm curious to see if anyone has knows what my prob is. i've got an 88 with a 351W and it'll smell reeeeal bad, blowin the stench, running rich whatever you wanna call it and the check engine light goes on, but then it'll go off about a 1/3 to 1/2 of the time and during that time it won't smell. the guy i bought it from said the light was from the O2 sensor but if it was broken wouldn't the light always stay on and it always run rich? Anyone have a clue what's up with it? also does anyone know how much it should cost to replace the driver side radius arm bushings and intake manifold gasket?
for the O2 sensor...not always. Sometimes they will work ok at idle and for a bit, and after some time they will not give an accurate or stong enough signal to the ECU. There is a way to check each O2 sensor with a meter.
The radius arm bushings aren't that much. I would get some poly-urethane bushings from "Energy Suspension" for about $20ish.
Intake manifold gasket is like $12, depending where you get it.
cool, thanks, that's what i wanted to know. Anyone know how hard it is to replace that gasket? Should i take it to a shop or is it a doable yourself thing like a fuel pump?
Either way...it isn't really that hard. You have to remove the intake, and lots of other junk in the way. On my 96, there is 1 plastic bolt in the center side holding the upper intake to the lower intake, which is a hex head. This is the hardest screw to remove / re-install because it is in the center, underneath the upper intake. You'll need a long 1/4" extension, and the right size hex key to remove it.
The O2 sensor reading will only trigger the CE light after the same fault was found by the PCM during the last forty consecutive operations of the engine. If there is even one time that the fault isn't there, its starts counting all over again.
Which intake manifold gasket needs replacing? On a fuel injected 351 there is a lower intake-to-cylinder heads gasket/valley pan and an upper plenum-to-lower manifold gasket.

Ahhh, ok. Have fun! Oh and keep in mind that therer are two coolant crossovers in the lower intake. One across the front and one across the rear. So you will have cooling system refilling to do as well.
