polarbear "Excellent question. The obvious answer, if you take a walk through most neighborhoods, is that there are multiple makes parked in driveways. In my own driveway, Ford and GM are about equally represented (what a surprise)."

You are correct sir. I have a Dodge and a Ford in my driveway. Even though the only thing that has went wrong in 140,000 miles on my 96 Ram was a front hub bearing, I came over to Ford. I personally dont like the way Dodge went with the body, to me its ugly, and some other things. I needed a bigger truck and the Super duty my dad bought won me over to the Ford side and thats why I have my Excursion.
Private market point is good also, even on the smaller level. Most of the autoparts stores that deliver around here have a mix of different trucks. The same part store may have a 3 different makes of trucks, its whatever they could get a good deal on at the time.
For the GM side, I have a cousin and an uncle who are true GM guys. In 2000 they went in to the GMC dealer and on the same day my uncle bought a 3500HD dually and my cousin bought a 2500HD 4x4 short bed. Both are extended cabs with all the same interior options and have the 6.0gas engine. Both started knocking before 15,000 miles. GMC told them it since it stopped when the engine warmed up it and they knew about the issue it was not deemed detrimental to the engine and wouldnt do anything. They have both also had AC issues and one had to have a compressor replaced. They both pull well and my cousins has 38,000 miles on it with it still knocking, its paid for next month and he is looking for an early 90's Cummins Dodge to build up. He said if he ever buys another new truck it will be a Super Duty.

Go measure your transfer case crossmember's clearance-that's the lowest chassis part on your truck. I have 16" under my F250's. How much do you have??

Hummer's have independant susp on all 4 corners-a 2500HD don't. Case closed!

Just the H1. The H2 is a modified Silverado/Tahoe/HD Chassis (various components from the different models).

yeah for the ultimate off road vehicle, I'd get the army hum-vee. but i'd go with the 6.0. I've never heard anything good about dodge trannys, except the 6 speed manual. plus ive seen a 98 dodge cummins and the frame had more rust than my 88 150

do you mean the 6.0 gas or 6.0 psd? i would get one for the ultimate off road vehicle too. but i would at least want the dmax, like in the new ones. it would be cool to put a 6.0 psd or cummins in one.

i too agree with that. also the a-arms may be conected low on the actual hub, but you rarely ever get high centered out by the tire. the easiest place to get high center is the front diff. personally the way gm's front suspension holds up i hope they come out with IRS with adjustable load carrying capacity. that would be great.

I said if you looked at it, that I want GM to go to 4 wheel IS that is what i ment by this (ON THE TRUCKS). I know hummers have IS on all corners, but that doesn't negate the arguement that IS has the advantage off road.....

I have to dissagree that the Hummer (Army) is the best off roader. The Jeep Wrangler or the Toy Tacoma are far better. The Hummer is just to fat to fit anywhere but wide open desert. They could not use them is tne mountains in Afganistan because they would fall off the narrow mountain trails. Also they are powered by the horrible 6.5 diesel - one of the worst of modern diesels.

Ill smoke a hummer ANY day with my jeep...lol...and SFA is very far superior to IFS when offroading! Of all the offroad competitions I have been to and seen on tv...i can say I bet I may have seen 1 or 2 IFS trucks....if IFS is so good why do they make SFA conversions for them??? And I also say stay with the facts....The new diesel power mag shows it all...empty the dodge beat the 6.0 by a lil bit, they both blew the duramax out the water, loaded the 6.0 beat the cummings and they both smoked the hell out of the duramax, the 6.0 beating the duramax by 3.37 secs!!!

If it was me I would stick with a 7.3...I got my truck from my bro-n-law, he bougthh a 6.0, when he couldn't pass me up he called on his cell and asked if he could have his truck back...hehehe

military humvees are poodle poop! They fall apart! I was driving one and the freakin whole hub assembly came off and pasted me up! In mud they...SINK! I used to have a video of a hummer tryin to pass over some rocks...the guy was getting pissy just nailed the rocks and kept getting hung up...after a STOCK cherokee pulled him off the rocks it went over with no problem...followed by a TJ and a YJ/...they look pretty, but they ned to stay in the parking lots!

the sink, which was exactly what they were designed to do. they are built heavy. it is all how you drive them obviously they are a huge vehicle and don't fit hardly anywhere with ease. sometimes smaller is better, but they are a great off road vehicle when the going gets tough.

the reason they make SFA conversions is because of the ease of the project and is a lot cheaper to take it a bunch higher.

a well designed and built IS far superior to any SA system, not that the hummer is a great off roader, due to its huge size and weight it is not great. i would definately not want to send our troops out in a cherokee if you know what i am saying.

"unless of course you bring the hummer or other true offroad vehicles into the situation. "
Here you say true offroad vehicle...

" not that the hummer is a great off roader,"

Here you say it is not! It is a tank on wheels thats all...not really offraod, I have driven plenty..they are Edited by Admin

YOur 4x4 will all depend on what you want to do with it. If you want a mud beast...then sure use a IFS, but if you plan on hitting th e mountains, SFA is the ONLY way to go. COnvertions are not cheap at all, it would cost just as much to lift the entire truck and a convertion cost. But in all reality we could go back and forth on this forever, it would be a matter of opinion, just like the age old agrument, " Which is better, standard or automatic?"
