well, this is my first small block. im very proud. as of now she has a wrist pin knock, oil leaks (suprise!), and some other issues. need to do a lean drop and wire the choke correctly (currently held open with a zip tie). she's in an 85 f150 and there was hack job of a swap done by the last owner. have lots of wires to clean up and other messes to make sense of.
my first question is about flywheels. i am tryin to pick up another motor and i was wondering if its possible to just bolt on the flywheel even if the motor had a flex plate. i remember on my other car, the auto's had these brass bushings in hadda remove. hope this is not the case.
i noticed that the 400's crank has the same specs as the 351w's except for the stroke. possible swap? isnt the 351m a 351c w/ 400 pistons, rods, and crank?
the choke is supposed to be wired to the grey wire coming offa the oil gauge right? (thats what i was told, im just confirming).
this was an efi to carb swap (i have come to that conclusion due to the mess of wires.) there is an ecu w/o a harness and the rest of the harness laying under my dash. a nasty nest of wires, and a whole bunch of stuff i dont know what it is. ill take some pics tomorrow or monday. but what do i need to make this motor run. i just want the thing to run. dont need no fancy emissions controls or anything else.
my plans for the next motor are to find a nice carb for it (still thinking of that one tho) a dual plane intake manifold, some port matching, headers, and gonna make a call to find a cam that makes very good tq #'s from idle to about 4k.
that is all for now. thanks guys!

figured since i didnt hear anything on it. eh, im tryin to stay away from the cleveland. i know its the high output motor, but it also isnt as strong as the windsor.
the clevland is a strong motor vs the windsor. just the windsor has more aftermarket available and is still produced today. the clevelands are harder to find but if you have one then go for it. they scream
interesting. i heard vise versa. i did some research (not much, tho) about the difference and the windsor has bigger mains, a stronger bottom end all together, but heads arent as good as the cleveland.
i would def think they scream since they were used in all the high performance cars. but in this case im looking for low RPM power. more torque. lets just say im obssesed with tq.
so will this be efi or carbed? if carbed i say stroke the 351w to a 393 or 408. it costs the same as a normal rebuild and produces some great low end power
carb. if i go .30 over i would need new pistons correct? i cant just compensate using rings? also, if i do go that route, where can i find a set of pistons? im sure there is a huge aftermarket support. my last project i was using custom pistons by JE that cost a fortune and i dont have that kind of money to dish out at this point.
a 393 stroker will use 351w rods and 302 pistons with a stroker crank. Nothing custom. You can get a complete kit from Summit for around $1400. And yes if you bore the cylinders you need new pistons to match the bore.
