I have 91 f350 dually. Replaced engine with Ford crate reman last year, attached ATS turbo, installed LUK clutch kit and installed 4.88 posi. I carry 10'6" Bigfoot camper and tow a three horse bumper pull trailer at the same time. I have no problems with this set up until I have to reverse on anything but strictly level surface. The truck bucks like crazy if I try and slip the clutch and moves way to fast if I let the clutch all the way out.
I have the stock transmission, which I understand is the close ratio version of the ZF 5 (S5-42 ZF). What I need is something else. Can I get the trans rebuilt with the wide ratio gears? What potential problems will I encounter? Would I be better off to put in a 6 speed or the 47 ZF with the 524 reverse ratio?
I don't mind spending some money, I all ready have more in it than it is worth. I plan on using this truck for at least 5 more years, most likely longer and this problem is driveing me crazy.
when ya say it bucks ya mean that the clucth is half in half out and the truck hops. if this is so it has nothing to do with gear ratios ect. what it is is the clutch graping and then slipping. then grapping and slipping again. This is a common problem on farm tractors in reverse when trying to slip the clucth with a ahigh load. The two fixes that i no are to one check yar pilot bearing and the tranny input shaft. If the pilot bearing is bad or is spinng on the input shaft this can casue this. has the truck alwasy done this or just started. if its just started it could be the bearing. or did it just start when ya put in the clutch. the other fix is not really a fix but away of living with it. that is to let the clucth out till the truck starts rolling and put the clutch in and let the truck coast. then while the truck is still rolling let the clutch out and then back in to make the truck roll a little more. just keep doing this and the truck should not hop. rite back with more info see if we can come up with a better solution.
