What do you mean by that? You mean if the thermostat is closed there is only a pinhole sized opening it is flowing through? So, in other words my thermostat is bad? Please clarify if you have the time. Thanks!

correct. there should be almost no flow through the upper hose when the tstat is closed. the water outlet should only be flowing coolant to the heater hose which is a seperate casting on the outlet.
