where to start? cat. would be my guess. pcv stuck? should i lean out mixture. basic tune up probably wouldn't do anything. six runs great except for an off idle stumble when warmed up. dies if i feather the gas off idle. any suggestions on where to start would be great. "emission pass" additive a waste of money? only getting about 12mpg also. thanks, jeremy
id try a cat here in michigan we dont have emission checks but ive found a bad cat can raise heck with an engine stalling, running rough, i even worked on a jag that wouldnt even start!!! so i would check the cat
Is it stock? I have the same exact truck, and have never even come close to failing. The EECIV system is a very reliable and when it fails pops out codes.
Crawl under the truck and make sure it even has a CAT, the stock cat is of course right after the exhaust downpipes under the passengers feet. the CAT is a possibility. A bad or disconnected smog pump is also a possibility since the CAT needs forced air to chemically break up the CO. 12 MPG isn't bad but you may want to improve that, since the oil guys are raising prices.
had the codes checked. a 538 came up - insufficient rpm change or cylinder identification senso fail. doesn't seem emission related. also i noticed the air mngmnt. valve is peeing air in pulses. hose comes up from the air pump to this valve which has a vac line going into a diaphram and a weird filter type housing. the other hose tee's off and parallel's the pass. side of block and wraps around the back (i assume it connects to the exhaust?) what is this thing and is it supposed to be pulsing air out? i never heard or felt it moving air before. would my idle air control valve cause any problems. any suggestions would be great. should i just replace the cat and call it done?
