I have a '89 F150 2WD with the 5 litre V8 and AOD tranny.
It starts and runs well around town and at low speed, but on the highway it pings when under load. If I stomp on it and it shifts down,it accelerates reasonably good. Power at less than full throtle is poor. I can't use overdrive on the highway even with an empty bed. It will loose speed, ping and shift down even on the slightest grade.
I have replaced the knock sensor, throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor and even put in a rebuilt ECM, all with no results.
Any ideas will be appreciated. Tom
I agree with Andy M. - Check your timing 1st as that is one of the major causes of pinging. Could be too much deflection in the timing chain - what kind of miles do you have on the motor? Also could be the quality/grade of gas. Have you tried running a tank of midgrade fuel just to see if the pinging stops? Your performance, or lack of same, tends to lead me back to the timing matters though. Start there and post back.
I believe there is a knock sensor screwed into the side of your block, it senses knocking and tells the computer when to adjust the timing. You definitely have some timing issues. Try www.fordfuelinjection.com for the basics.
Checked timing with spout jumper removed and it came up about 7 degrees BTC. Did not increase to 10 as I thought that would make it worse.
To adjust timing do you loosen clamp and twist the distributer just like on older models?
Tom
Remove the spout connector, loosen distrib. clamp, and adjust distributor to 10 Btdc or as indicated by the emissions sticker under your hood. Retighten dist. and reconnect spout. The timing will be controlled by the ECM after that and you no longer need to worry about any further mechanical timing adjustments. You must try and see if there are any codes just in case. try fordfuelinjection .com
what about bad gas? does it do it with both tanks?
could also be a dirty airspeed sensor at the intake. I dont think there are going to be any codes as he didnt say the check engine light came on. you might change the fuel filter also. a restriction in the exhaust at the cats or muffler can cause a ping also.

Here is a shot in the dark, is your radiator original. Well my 1990 F-250 5.0 5spd stopped pinging after a HD radiator swap. I guess it had somthing to do with the engine running hotter, also with a load on the truck or if I where going up a certain grade it would also ping .....
