My'93 F150 4x4 5spd has a lot of gear whine. The trans has auto trans fluid in it which I am assuming is normal. If it is , would changing it out to syntetic ATF help the gear noise as it does in power steering pumps, or is there something better?
My '95 has the Mazda 5 speed. I thought it had gear whine, but it was the rear end. You can tell because the noise goes with the road speed, and does not repeat through each gear. I am running full synthetic ATF in my tranny and full synthetic rear lube. Just in case you think of experimenting: I tried 10w40 motor oil in the tranny and it worked, but 20w50 made this tranny so it wouldn't want to shift.
Watch out for that whine--I just got done rebuilding my '93 F150
Supercab Flareside's tranny and clutch ($2194.67--oh, my achin'
hip pocket!). It started as a whine on the highway, and ended
up with a trashed gearbox. I'm told the Mazda transmission is
prone to drying out its seals, and dropping >all< the fluid in
a short period. The boys at the shop said when they opened the
thing up, it smelled like someone was welding in there, and the
plastic parts inside were melted.
Obviously, others here may be able to provide more tech data;
I'm just a guy who no longer trusts Mazda transmissions
Good luck.
