Man,I can't believe this, but I have an f-350 4wd dually that I have owned for 2 years and put 14,000 miles on. I bought it used, and noticed on my very first vegas trip that under hard braking,The front end would shimmy!,,Well, I assumed it was the brakes,so I knew I was gonne have to deal with them eventually, but I drive mostly around town and at like 45 mph so...no big deal...cause it seemed to stop fine!
Well, my lf tire was wearing REALLY bad,so I decided to take it in and have alignment adjusted and replace front tires. When on the rack the second time, trying to figure out why the truck was pulling HARD right upon braking now, rsted my hand on top of tire..and it moved!!
Apparantly the wheel bearing is TOAST! geez!!!
So,I need to address this problem and was hoping one of you kind folks familiar with this site could direct me to some"how to" post on this subject and brakes( hopefully with some pics!)
Not to be smart but a good place to start is with the purchase of a service manual. Chilton, Haynes, or a FSM if you can come across one reasonably. You might be able to find one on disc from e-bay for under $20. What you need to do is rather involved. Instuctions with photos are all there for your specific year and model.
I'm sure there are folks on the site that can do it in there sleep. They will be able to help with specific questions or problems.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
The hub/bearing is a single unit. There are 4 bolts that hold it to the knuckle.Normally when they go bad(especially with that much play)the ABS light will come on.
No.There's no spindle (per say) on your truck. The bearing, spindle, wheel studs, are a complete unit.
O.k. maybe I used the wrong term. There has to be a shaft that rides through the bearing( axle shaft maybe)...That's what I'm referring to...do you think THAT may need to be replaced as well...or not very likely
thanks for taking your time with me
( btw.. i do have a shop manual, but I have to say, it is quite difficult to find the exact thing I'm looking for in there...I mean your jumping all over the book and to me..it seemed incomplete. The sticky here is in much greater detail.. and it is the FORD manual)
Remove lock ring from outside of hub, remove hub.Remove snap ring from axle shaft.Remove tie-rod from knuckle, remove caliper/rotor,unplug wire for wheel sensor. There are 4 nuts (21 mm) on back side of knuckle that hold bearing assy.
