I have a '94 F-150 XLT extended cab 302 auto. A couple of time when warm, it refused to start. Engine cranked, but wouldn't fire. Dealer cleaned out the fuel system. Now when I start it, after about two seconds, the idle shoots up to about 1500 RPM and the check engine light flashes four times. Then the idle drops to where the engine coughs, then it idles fine. No other symptoms. Any clues?
It sounds like the engine is in its self diagnostic mode . The check engine light with flash 4 times when entering the Key On Engine Running Test . It Id's that it is a V8 . Have you or anyone else checked for Ecu codes & left the jumper wire connected to the Self test connector ? How does the engine run when driving it ?
No, I haven't taken it to the dealer -- don't really trust them after he charged me $450 to change the oil pan gasket. Anyway, this problem arose only after the fuel system cleaning and never in the six years (108K miles). The engine runs fine while driving; 15.7 mpg is standard for around-town driving.
Is there any pause between the 4 flashes , Such as Flash , pause , flash flash flash ? Or any variation on that ? If its a code 14 that indicates the PIP ( Profile Ignition Pickup ) Circuit has a problem which would explain the no start problem when the engine is warm .
Try checking for any stored fault codes in the Ecu & see what you get there . Like I said before , the same thing would happen if you were running the KOER self test . The Check Engine light would flash 4 times indicating that it is an 8 cyl engine . Ill check with a buddy of mine to see what he thinks about , It kinda has me puzzled .
Also , Explain Fuel System Cleaning ? What exactly was done ? If the problem arose after they did this then you really need to consult them for a resolution to the problem .
The dealer "cleaned the fuel injection system." I assume this means they hooked up one of those pressurized cans of injector cleaner and ran it through the system. I don't have more detail than that. And as mentioned, I've not had good luck with any of the three Ford dealers in my town so I wanted to go to an independent repair shop. But I wanted to have some idea of what the problem is before I go in there.
