What engine to drop in?
The truck right now doesnt quite have enough power for me... It gets up and goes... but whenever I tried to pull anything it was very sluggish.... sometimes I would have to floor it just to maintain speed uphills with a bed full of lumber... So I was wondering what you guys would suggest as a good drop in motor that would still maintain decent mileage ( I dont want a 460)
The 351 sounds nice... but it only has like 20 more horses and 25 more lb feet of torque.. and thats not too big of a difference.
351 cid * 5000 RPM approximately equals 460 cid * 3800 RPM and since the 460 makes gobs of torque way below 3800 rpm it comes about about the same.
Unless of course you drive WOT all the time.
You didn't say what year your truck is, so if it's a carb truck you pretty much can do what you want as far as swapping engines, changing carbs and jetting, stroke the crank, overbore the block, different cam, etc.
With an EFI engine you have to keep your modifications within reasonable limits as the EFI computer will not understand cam overlap or extra displacement etc. It will to a degree, but if you go too far you're EFI truck will run terrible.
