Worn out oil pump.
Clogged oil pump pickup tube/screen.
Worn bearings, lifters, etc.
Clogged oil passages after the oil pump.
Clogged oil filter, but only if the oil bypass is stuck too.
Man, that is a lot of possibilities. I guess I will start with the oil pump. I have already installed a new sending unit.
You said worn bearings, I assume you are saying cam bearings. I sure hope that isn't it.
The most likely cause of low oil pressure is the pump/pickup and connecting rod bearings. When changing the oil pump, check out the bearings and the bearing clearances. If the crank isn't damaged, they can be replaced with the engine still in the truck, but it's not real easy.
There are crank bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings...
I'd start with the pump/pickup tube. It's the easiest thing to change and you might get lucky. If the engine still knocks... that usually indicates the damage has been done.
Sometimes you get lucky. I've had a nasty valve tap that started at about 40K miles, and I've been listening to it for another 290K.
If the engine is completely shot, you can at least re-use the new pump on the new engine.
How hard would be be to get to the oil pump on my 95 351? I don't think I have oil pressure problems. At 30 degrees on startup the oil pressure will only be up to about N on Normal. Which to me isnt very high. When its warm and the engine is was the gauge gets up to about M-A. I know not to trust factory gauges, But just in case anything should go wrong...
