Well today while waiting in line at Wendy's I noticed a kind of slapping metalic sound while stopped and in drive. When I put it in neutral it would go away.
After I left, the check engine light came on for a few minutes and then went away.
I checked the oil when I got home and it's full.
I'm thinking maybe it's either the flex plate or the timing chain. There is around 154,000 on it and I don't know if the chain was ever changed, however I did have the trans rebuilt about 15,000 ago.
Anyone have any ideas?
I doubt you were hearing the timing chain. These engines have a hydraulic tensioner (engine oil pressure) that takes any excess slop out of the chain when the engine is running. I just looked at my 91 engine that was rebuilt after 229K miles and the original chain / guide and tensioner looked as good as new.
I would start by investigating the engine code. If the MIL lamp was lit, most likely a code was stored. Pull it and go from there.
I did find the noise today. I have a cracked weld on the exhaust pipe and the muffler is also coming apart from the inside. I haven't checked the codes yet but think it probably is the O2 sensor as the light comes and goes.
Going to put on all new from the cat back Monday, that should take care of it.
