Install a tach on a '05 4.2L?

I have a XL F150 with no tach. I would like to get one even though I have an auto. Would any regular aftermarket tach work? How do I hook it up to my new truck?
I have installed em in older non-EFI/computer cars and can do that N/P but I don't know if its any different for this '05.

Thanks guys!

You have to get the tach signal from the computer. Autometer has a module to hook up the tach on the later models, not sure if it works for the 05's

Tach question

On the passenger side of the engine side of the firewall find the pink wire in the loom, hook up tach here. I found the info on one of the guage makers help lines.

I ended up getting a 'Scan Gauge' and use one of the readouts as a tach.

4.2L Tach

I don't know if it's the same for all years, but I was told by a couple manufacturers for my '99 that i had to buy a tach that was compatible with a two-cylinder motor.

Where in the world do you put a tach where it will look good, not be in the way. If you put it on the dash you have to put holes in the dash and it faces the fury of the sun, plus its a visual obstruction. I would love on with my 2006, but I would prefer that it be with the rest of the gauges.

I put in in the left corner of my windshield. with my radar and the vehicle inspection stickers u have to have in texas its not really that big of an obstruction. i think it looks pretty good where it is and as for the hole in the dash im not worried about it because i dont plan on getting rid of ny truck any time soon. ill have it paid off as of this time next year.
